Nelly Cottoy affectionately known as the Queen of Zess™ stepped into the arena of Trinidad & Tobago’s prestigious National Calypso Queen Competition and made history on her very first attempt. A certified stage dismantler, multi-genre entertainer, and powerful voice in the Caribbean arts scene, Nelly proved that impact and purpose run deeper than trophies.
For many, the competition is about crowns. But for Nelly, it became an expression of heritage, resilience, and spiritual connection.
A Journey Marked by Purpose & Ancestral Pride
Nelly Cottoy Ominira (Freedom) National Calypso Queen performance
On her Instagram feed, Nelly shared one of the most meaningful motivations behind her performance honoring her deceased grandmother on what would’ve been her birthday. With the Guyanese flag worn proudly and her heart poured into every lyric and movement, she dedicated her performance to the ancestors who shaped her. 🇬🇾
Nelly’s calypso piece “Ominira (Freedom)” wasn’t just a song. It was a celebration a cultural expression that connected her roots to the stage and reminded everyone that freedom beats loud in the rhythm of our stories.
“I may not have won the judges,” Nelly declared, “but I won the hearts of the people and earned the protection, love, and respect of my ancestors!”
Her journey through the competition from first performance to finalist showed tremendous courage as a first timer standing among established veterans of the calypso art form.
Standing 10 Toes Down Among the Greats
Nelly’s path to the finals was not accidental. She entered the Calypso arena with a strategy and heart set on representation not just for herself, but for all the youths out there doing the damn thing despite the odds.
From her first original calypso entry to securing her finalist position, she has reshaped perceptions about what it means to be a modern calypsonian one who blends tradition with contemporary voice.
Even though the final results didn’t swing in her favor this time, Nelly holds her head high impacting an entire industry through sheer artistry and spirit.
Purpose > Placement
In her reflections after the finals, Nelly reminded us of what truly matters in art:
Purpose is bigger than placement
Impact goes far beyond trophies
Culture is worth celebrating
Freedom of self-expression is powerful
She expressed gratitude not just for her own journey but for culture, heritage, and the art form that carries our collective memories.
This is what it means to be a performer with soul and fire.
