On August 18, 2024, Guyana and the wider Caribbean lost one of its most treasured cultural voices: Dave Martins, founder and leader of The Tradewinds. At 90 years old, his passing marked the end of a remarkable earthly journey, but his music his stories, his wit, his pride live on in every Guyanese heart.
Today, one year later, we pause to honor not only his life but also the meaning of his legacy.

From Guyana to the World
Born in Hague, West Coast Demerara, Dave left Guyana for Canada in 1955 at the age of 19. In Toronto, he discovered both the shock of winter and the strength of Caribbean identity far from home. In 1966, he formed The Tradewinds, a group that would go on to redefine Caribbean music by blending humor, storytelling, and infectious rhythm.
What started as a trio in Toronto soon grew into an international act. With songs like “Honeymooning Couple” capturing radio airwaves, The Tradewinds became a soundtrack for Caribbean people across the diaspora.
A Lifetime of Creativity
Dave Martins’ career was nothing short of prolific.
22 albums recorded
Over 5,000 performances worldwide
More than five decades of music all without the backing of a major label.
He was a pioneer of the do-it-yourself model long before the digital era, relying on dedication, community, and a deep understanding of his audience.

‘Not a Blade of Grass’ – An Anthem Beyond Music
Among his many songs, one stands above the rest in the Guyanese imagination: “Not a Blade of Grass.” Written in 1979, the song quickly became Guyana’s unofficial second national anthem. Its message that not even the smallest part of our land or identity should be surrendered remains as relevant today as when he first sang it.
In recognition of his contribution, Dave was awarded the Golden Arrow of Achievement in 1982. But beyond awards, his music continues to speak to us: of sovereignty, of pride, of the resilience of a people who refuse to be erased.
The Heart of the Caribbean Spirit
As his son Tony Martins beautifully reflected, Dave’s music “captured the essence of the Caribbean spirit… blending upbeat rhythms with biting satire… inviting us to laugh at ourselves but also stand tall.”
Whether it was a humorous take on daily life, or a powerful reminder of unity and belonging, Dave Martins’ songs were more than melodies they were mirrors. They reminded us of who we are, and gave us reason to celebrate it.

Carrying the Legacy Forward
We extend heartfelt condolences once again to his family Tony, Annette, Luana, Alex, Victoria and all who carry his memory in their hearts.
As we look forward, especially in this season where our voices matter more than ever, we remember what Dave stood for: pride, unity, ownership, and love for Guyana. While we won’t speak to politics, we echo what his life’s work reminds us use your voice, stand tall, and honor what belongs to you.
Rest Well, Maestro
One year on, the void remains. But so does the music. Every time “Not a Blade of Grass” is sung, every time a Tradewinds song makes us laugh, or smile, or reflect we are reminded that Dave Martins never truly left us.

His songs are our stories. His legacy is our pride.
Rest in peace, Dave Martins. Your voice belongs to us forever.
