Janelle Abraham has spent her career blending storytelling with the heartbeat of Caribbean culture. A Trinidad born music video director and film producer, she has directed over 85 music videos for international stars like Wyclef Jean, Method Man, Raekwon, and Flavour N’abania. She’s also produced the Peacock series Dope Fiend and a Mobb Deep documentary, carving a lane for authentic storytelling across music and film.

This year, she played a pivotal role in the

Caribbean Music Awards as a consultant producer, connecting sponsors and networks while ensuring the show stayed true to Caribbean culture at the highest level. We caught up with Janelle to talk about her journey, the behind-the-scenes of pulling off one of the biggest Caribbean award shows, and what’s next on her creative path.

Roots & Early Inspiration

“I’m from Trinidad, raised in a musical family my dad, Brigo, was a calypso artist,” Janelle shares. “Moving to the U.S. as a teen and facing challenges like homelessness taught me resilience and shaped my drive to create meaningful work.”

Growing up surrounded by music inspired her, but it was those early struggles that fueled her creative fire. “Directing and producing became both therapeutic and a way to channel my passion.”

Inside the Caribbean Music Awards

As consultant producer, Janelle’s role was central. “I connected sponsors and networks I brought in

Trace TV, which helped secure Hot 97, and also JetBlue while making sure the show represented Caribbean culture at the highest level.”

The process, she admits, was both challenging and rewarding. “It’s a mix of logistics, creativity, and collaboration, and seeing everything come together on stage is priceless.”

And the moments that make it all worth it? “When artists connect deeply with their audience it reminds me why I do this work.”

She sees these kinds of award shows as more than just entertainment. “They spotlight the richness of Caribbean music, help artists reach new audiences, and inspire the next generation of creatives.”

Career Highlights & Achievements

Janelle’s career extends far beyond the

Caribbean Music Awards. She has directed music videos for global icons and produced culturally impactful projects.

“I’ve directed over 85 music videos for artists like Method Man, Wyclef Jean, Flavour N’abania, and Raekwon,” she says. “I’ve also produced Dope Fiend on Peacock and a Mobb Deep documentary, and I’m currently working on African platform collaborations and a TV series.”

When asked which projects stand out the most, she points to two: “Dope Fiend for streaming on Peacock and my Mobb Deep documentary both reflect my commitment to authentic storytelling and connecting with audiences.”

And her upcoming projects are equally exciting. “Yes a TV series and collaborations with African platforms to bring diverse stories and music to wider audiences.”

Perspective & Vision

Janelle believes Caribbean music’s influence will only grow stronger. “It will keep growing globally, blending with other genres while maintaining its roots. Caribbean artists will increasingly influence trends worldwide.”

But she also sees gaps that need to be filled. “More platforms that connect Caribbean talent with global audiences while keeping the culture authentic I want to help build those spaces.”

Her advice for aspiring creatives in event production, management, or cultural organizing?

“Be passionate, stay curious, and start small. Research, network, and learn from every experience consistency and resilience are key.”

The Personal Side

Though her work speaks volumes, Janelle admits, “I’m naturally shy, but I channel that energy into my work. I express myself best through creativity rather than words alone.”
