The creative energy coming out of Guyana continues to evolve and this time, the spotlight is on film.
British-Guyanese filmmaker James Vancooteen is setting a new bar for the country’s visual storytelling. Born in the UK but raised in Guyana from the age of 6 to 15, Vancooteen has built a successful career in the UK film industry. Now, he’s returned to Guyana—not just to shoot stories, but to elevate the entire Guyanese film scene.

“It’s about investing in the next generation of storytellers,” James said, as quoted in the coverage by @itatepondis.
His Latest Work: TURF
James’ newest project, TURF, is a powerful Guyanese production that brings together two characters from opposing worlds one from Georgetown, one from Linden whose paths collide through passion and conflict.
🎭 The cast? 100% local talent.
🎥 The story? Raw, real, and resonant.

TURF explores:
Identity
Territory
Ambition
All within the cultural backdrop of today’s Guyana.
Release Date: August 26, 2025
Why TURF Matters
What sets TURF apart is its deep commitment to authentic representation. Featuring Guyanese actors, real dialect, and locations you’ll recognize, the film aims to create something that feels like home but looks ready for international screens.

“The film is proof that Guyana has stories worth telling and the talent to tell them,” said @itatepondis in their feature.
